Another person has been arrested in connection with two arson attacks in Sheerness.
An 18-year-old man from the town became the fifth person to be taken into custody by police after a blaze at the Glass House in Marine Parade and a shed fire in nearby Alma Road three days later.
He was arrested on suspicion of arson on Monday morning and was bailed to Thursday, August 22.
Four teenagers – three 15-year-old boys and a 16-year-old boy all from Sheerness – have already been released on bail.
The blaze in the block of flats was started at around 3.25pm on Monday, June 24.
Firefighters were called to the shed at about 7.30pm on Thursday, June 27. It was destroyed.
Police are still keen to speak to anyone who may have any information or video footage of the fires and are encouraging anyone who hasn’t already come forward to do so.
Meanwhile, the two friends who fell from the top as they tried to escape the flames are back home and recovering.
We reported last week how Kirsty Sawyer and Paul Miles had been reunited with each other and their pal Craig Monahan – who was with them when the blaze started.
Kirsty, 19, is still suffering with her throat which was badly burnt and she is unable to talk very well.
The future of the former pub, built around 1870, is still uncertain.
Swale council’s building control team has boarded it up and made it secure and some residents have been given access to retrieve belongings.
It is not thought to be in an unstable condition although Richmond Street remains partially blocked off.
Some of the flats are not accessible due to the extent of fire damage and the council’s housing team is working with tenants to help them find secure alternative housing.
Temporary accommodation has been sourced until long term solutions can be found.
