Firefighters were called to a holiday park this afternoon after a caravan caught light.
One witness described her fear of a follow-up gas explosion as firefighters battled to tackle the blaze at Central Beach Holiday Park in Grove Avenue, Leysdown-on-Sea, Sheerness, tonight (November 7).
The fire started around 5.30pm and the woman, who did not want to be named, said two fire engines attended.
“I saw the blue lights then looked to see a fire engine,” she said. “That's when I saw all the smoke and a huge orange glow above the caravans.
“I started panicking when I realised the scale of the fire and prepared everyone in the caravan to leave in case we were asked to evacuate.
“There were a lot of people leaving their caravans and waiting near the entrance to the park.”
She added: “The gas bottles were the first thing that came to mind as I know they pose a huge risk so it was rather scary to see.
“I tried to ask if it was safe to stay but they were all too busy fighting the fire to speak to anyone.”
A spokesperson for Kent Fire and Rescue said: “Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a caravan alight, in Grove Avenue, Leysdown-on-Sea, Sheerness.
“Two fire engines attended, and crews wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets to put the fire out. There were no reported injuries.”
Crews left about 6.30pm.
