Firefighters have fully extinguished around 1,500 tonnes of hay which were alight after four days.

Crews were first called to the scene of a barn blaze in Leysdown Road, Eastchurch, on Sheppey, at midday on Saturday (September 28).

At the height of the incident, eight fire engines and two bulk water carriers were in attendance.

As of 8.30pm on Saturday, the response had been scaled back to three fire engines and the following day only one remained.

In an update on Monday morning, motorists were warned that smoke from the blaze was blowing over the B2231 Leysdown Road due to a change in wind direction.

People in the area were also being advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to large amounts of smoke.

A spokesperson for Kent Fire and Rescue Service added: “Please share this information with any loved ones who may not have access to the internet.”

This advice has now been lifted as crews left the scene at around 5pm yesterday (October 1).

One person did report minor burn injuries but did not need medical assistance.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
