Chip shop owner counts cost after blaze at Golden Fish Bar in Queenborough

Firefighters were called to a blaze at a popular fish and chip shop this lunchtime.

Husband-and-wife team Ruby and Daljit Bath, of the Golden Fish Bar in Queenborough, called 999 after flames started coming from the eatery's two chip fryers at about 11.30am.

Three fire engines were called to the Railway Terrace shop and a crew wearing breathing apparatus used compressed air foam to put out the blaze.

They also used fog spike to fully extinguish the fire.

Mr and Mrs Bath, who have owned the Golden Fish Bar since 1999, said they were shocked by the “horrible” incident.

Mr Bath said: “I turned both the fryers on as normal, like I do every morning, went out the back to carry on preparing things and when I came back inside the fryers were on fire.

"I couldn't believe what I saw."

His wife added: “Within five minutes of the fryers being turned on it just flared up, and once it had caught fire it travelled.

“We didn’t have a chance to stop it.”

The couple said they ran for the phone, which was at the back of the shop, to call the fire service straight away.

The fire ignited from the fish bar's chip fryer and travelled.

Mr Bath, who had his hair singed by the flames, said: “The fire engines were here in around five minutes of us calling. We couldn’t fault them at all.”

Firefighters left the scene at around 2.15pm.

Mrs Bath said the couple were “really shocked” by what had happened.

“We live upstairs and the main thing is that we are all OK and there has been no long-term damage,” she said.

“We have never, ever had an incident like this before. It’s horrible.”

Mr Bath said it will take at least a couple of months for the fish bar to be back up and running after today's blaze.

“We will need to take out all the old fryers, put new ones in and get the shop back to normal before we can reopen,” he said.
