The toilets were ruined in the blaze and the inside of the building was smoke-damaged.

A council spokesman said: “We’re currently waiting to hear from our insurers to approve getting to work on rectifying the damage, which will cost in the region of £10,000.

“The fire service report identified the cause as rubbish being deliberately set alight, and the damage has been reported to the police to investigate.”

The council has asked anyone with information to hand it to police quoting the crime reference number, 46/16427/23.

It is not the first time the conveniences have been damaged.

In 2020, a car was abandoned after it crashed into the side of the building.

The collision took out a length of fencing before the car came to rest facing the wrong way outside the building.
