Firefighters were called to help a sheep which had got stuck in mud – 50ft down a cliff.

Crews from Sheppey along with a special animal rescue unit from Faversham were called to Cartts Farm, Warden Road, Eastchurch, at 11.08am on Monday.

Watch manager Andy Bridger-Smart made his way down the cliff using safe access lines and was able to get a sling round the ewe, which was then winched to safety.

It is not clear how it fell or how long it had been there.

The sheep was not too distressed but very cold and was put under heat lamps overnight.

They were there until 2pm.

Mr Bridger-Smart said it was quite a challenging operation, particularly because the conditions at the moment are absolutely treacherous with slippery, soup-like mud.
