Firefighters rescuing cats from trees is a cliché they might never escape from.

But there was a new spin on the story last night when two bored teenagers found themselves stuck up a tree in Sheerness.

The two young men - aged 18 and 13 - had climbed up into the branches behind the Co-op Club, in St George's Avenue.

But they found they were unable to get down again because mists that had settled over the town made the bark too slippery.

Meanwhile, a small crowd of children had gathered below the tree - estimated to be about 25ft.

The adventurous duo had been above ground for 20 minutes before someone saw them and called Kent Fire and Rescue Service at just before 8pm.

A crew from Eastchurch station was sent and used a ladder to help them down by 8.35pm.

The teens told the firefighters who came to their aid they had decided to climb the tree because they were bored.

Watch manager Dylan Collard, who was at the scene, said: "They were pretty embarrassed. It was the first time we've had to go and rescue someone from up a tree, so it was something a bit different for us."

Sally Bliss, retained firefighter at Eastchurch, said: "The mist had made the tree slippery so getting back down was a little bit difficult for them. Boys will be boys."
