A former dock worker has organised a photograph exhibition.

Islander Martin Verrier, who worked repairing ships at Sheerness, is staging his 50 Years After exhibition at the town’s Russell Street library.

The photos will be on display until the end of January.

Mr Verrier had hoped to show his work last year to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the closure of the dockyard, but was unable to get the space.

The 57-year-old did an apprenticeship at Chatham Dockyard as a marine engineer before he got a job with a private ship repair firm back on the Island.

He worked there for 18 years until 1993, when the company closed down.

Mr Verrier, who now lives in Upnor, said: “My exhibition is riding on the strength of the anniversary last year.

“I think those who had worked in the ship repair industry would be most interested.

“It’s an industry that has not only declined but disappeared – certainly from this part of the Medway.”
