A group of angling enthusiasts had a great day out in the sunshine – and raised money in memory of an Islander at the same time.
Kemsley Community Angling Preservation Society’s charity fishing match raised £210 in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Trust.
Donations were made in memory of former Minster resident Linda Allport who died from cancer in December, 2011.
The 63-year-old’s daughters Tania Cross, 39, and Debbie Allport, 44, both from Minster, who regularly help out at the club, asked the society if they could use the match as a way to raise money for Marie Curie. Both daughters have helped out at the club in the past.
The charity helped them during their mother’s treatment and with support after her death.
Society chairman William Gergus, who knew Linda through her daughters, said: “She would do anything for everybody.”
The match took place on Sunday, July 28 at the front lake in Newman Drive, Kemsley. The competition drew a crowd of spectators to watch the 16 anglers taking part.
Bob Locke made the biggest catch of the day with his common carp weighing 3lbs 11oz and was presented with fishing equipment as a prize.
Every participant caught a fish during the five-hour match. Surplus bait is to be sold for charity.
Mr Gergus said: “Everybody was happy and we had a great day. Fishing matches can be cut-throat but this was more to do with the charity than anything.
“Everybody at the club is 100% behind it and we hope more people will find out about it. It was emotional, but it was a really good day.”
The match will will now become an annual event.
