Greenfingered youngsters are hoping to help out elderly and disabled Islanders through a new gardening project.

Root 22 is a scheme that aims to give young people the chance to learn horticultural skills while tending the backyards of those who cannot do it for themselves.

It was formed in June by Alison Neate, Marie Gavin and Abby Dewberry, of charity Catch 22, which works with people who are not employed, in training or education.

Work is currently taking place at the home of former RAF air raid mechanic Greg Willott.

The 74-year-old had several tours abroad including Penang in the 1960s and takes great pride in the appearance of his garden.

He got involved with the project through a representative from the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families’ Association (SSAFA) – Forces Help which had connections with Catch 22.

He said: “It is a very big garden so I can’t cope with it all any more.

“The lawn is looking good now and it is well under control so they have done a good job.

“The volunteers are interested in gardening so I give them little tips that I have accumulated over the years.”

The volunteers go every Wednesday from 10am to midday to pull weeds, trim the bushes, plant flowers and mow the lawn.

Abby, 19, joined as learner and is now using her experiences to help others as an apprentice learning support assistant with the charity.

She said: “Mr Willott is a lovely bloke, bless him, so going there every week he talks to us and I enjoy it.

“He used to it all himself, so he stands outside and tells us which plants are which.

“He teaches us about gardening and how to plant and stuff like that.”

Landscaper Andy O’Halloran also helps to show the learners what to do.

The project is still in its infancy, with one learner from Catch 22 and about five Isle of Sheppey Academy pupils taking part.

More volunteers are being sought to expand to other gardens.
