Sittingbourne dads opening second takeway in Warden on Sheppey

Two dads who started cooking burgers in their back garden have now expanded into a second pub.

Sittingbourne duo Chris Pickup and Mike Sproston began grilling meats more than two years ago after setting up a takeaway service in the town in January 2021.

After naming their business The Grumpy Dads Grill and appearing at festivals and events across the county, they have started their newest chapter at The Warden Bay pub, near Leysdown on Sheppey.

Originally opening at Millers Bar in Milton, Sittingbourne, they have once again joined forces with a pub to turn part of its site into a restaurant.

The two friends, who cooked for guests at the Rainham Beer Festival last weekend, are now using the Jetty Road site as a hub for their recipes, which include burgers, hot dogs and pizza boxes.

Customers can travel to the Island eatery and collect their order, or sit inside the watering hole to enjoy their order.

The Grumpy Dads are also planning to convert part of the site into a restaurant later this summer so guests can experience a more family experience.

Chris said: “A lot of the locals wanted us to open after we announced recently our next chapter would be here.

“So we have got our takeaways up and running in terms of collection.

“But we want to take it slow given how busy we have been at Millers Bar and take things gradually.

“So people can eat inside, but in more of a fast-food environment.

“This is so we can test things out which, given how busy we think we have been so far, hopefully bodes well for when the restaurant opens later on.

“We don’t have date yet of when that’s going to happen but it will be soon and it will be more of a restaurant feel.”

When speaking back in the spring, the 37-year-old explained the pair saw “a gap in the market for a dirty, hearty American burger.”

He says the business has seen people flock from the likes of Essex to taste their food, as well as the likes of Thanet and Faversham.

Opening times at The Warden Bay alternate, but can be found on the pair’s social media pages.
