Shane Scott, the driver killed when his Ford Fiesta was in a collision with an oncoming vehicle on the Minster Road, Minster, had been travelling on "the incorrect side of the road", a coroner has heard.
Mr Scott had been born and brought up in Sheppey, but had moved away to Greenacre Close, in Boston, Lincolnshire.
He had been back in the area visiting relatives when the accident happened on Friday, August 6, at around 9.30pm.
Coroner Bina Patel heard that Mr Scott, a carpenter, had been travelling towards Queenborough.
He was the sole occupant of his vehicle when it collided with a Jaguar coming the other way. Both the driver and passenger in the second vehicle were injured in the crash.
It is believed that Mr Scott, who was divorced, had been staying at his parents' home in Banner Way, after coming down from Lincoln to take his daughter out for a meal to celebrate her graduation from university.
The 45-year-old is survived by his parents Vivienne Scott and Arthur Scott. He leaves four sisters, two brothers and four children – two girls and two boys – aged between three and 28.
Speaking about the heartbreaking loss soon after the crash, Mr Scott's father Arthur said: "It was such a shock, especially being so close to us. He was with us before it happened and then popped out and that's when it happened.
"We were in bed just after midnight and had a knock at the door when police asked to come in and we knew it wasn't good news.
"I just knew it was going to be the worst thing you can think of."
Mr Scott's mother Vivienne added: "He was a bubbly person and loved everyone.
"He always wanted to help whether it be something big or just popping down to Tesco for some milk.
"He was always happy to help others."
After opening the hearing, Miss Patel adjourned the full inquest until November 23 at noon at the Archbishop's Palace in Maidstone.
