The wheels are in motion for a free open-air cinema to be set up on Sheppey this year – and now organisers need your help.

Last year we reported how the charity Sheerness Enhancement Association for Leisure (SEAL) was awarded a lottery grant of £9,970 to hold an outdoor film festival.

Chairman Chris Foulds has already taken delivery of the projector and sound system – which he said were “fantastic pieces of kit” – and it is hoped the inflatable screen, complete with the SEAL logo, will arrive this week.

Once all the equipment is on the Island, it will be set up and tested for light and sound, to see what will be the best time of day to hold the showings.

The location will be in the gardens near the entrance to the Sheppey Leisure Complex in Beachfields Park, Sheerness, with five movies being shown every fortnight throughout May and June, starting on Saturday, May 3.

The group has also applied for a public entertainments licence and if that is successful the group will be able to screen more films over the summer.

Mr Foulds said the organisers were in the process of choosing the first and last films, but would like the community to pick the other three.

They are asking for readers to get in touch with their top three family films.

Mr Foulds said: “It’s a fantastic piece of kit – worth the money we have spent.

“We want to engage the community and there was such good feedback when we asked which colour to paint the clock tower, we thought it would be nice to do the same for the films.

“It’s important and it’s no good us just deciding what we think people want to watch.

“The whole idea is to have it for the community, especially in the summer when they can enjoy a good film and sit outside in nice weather.”
