Elderly woman falls in road prompting police to close off Sheerness High Street

A high street was closed to traffic this morning after an elderly woman fell into the road.

Police closed off the Sheerness High Street from Millennium Way to the clock tower as paramedics treated the woman.

It is understood she fell off a kerb near the Oxfam shop and injured her hip.

A police spokesman said: "We were called to a medical incident in Sheerness High Street at 11.48am today.

Officers are currently at the scene providing assistance to medical professionals."

The road was still closed more than an hour later at 1pm while an ambulance remained parked in the High Street.

A spokesman for South East Ambulance Service said they received an emergency call just before noon that a woman had fallen and was unable to get up. The patient was treated in an ambulance before being taken to Medway Maritime Hospital.
