Sheerness High Street has received a huge boost with news that the former Bonmarche clothing store has been saved.

The announcement was greeted with delight by shoppers Cynthia Dungey, 67, and Sandra Skinner, 68, both of Vincent Court, Sheerness.

Mrs Skinner said: “This is brilliant. We were so sad when we heard it was closing. There are not many shops which sell clothes for women of our age.”

Mrs Dungey added: “It is nice and spacious inside and has wide aisles which make it easier if you are disabled.”

No one from the shop would comment but the ‘closing down’ posters have been replaced with a notice thanking customers for their support and welcoming them to a “new chapter”.

The new owner is Philip Day’s Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group which includes Peacocks.

The branch was threatened with the chop after closing down signs were spotted at the branch in November.

Administrators were appointed in October in the hope of finding a buyer for the troubled firm.
