People living in Lucas Close, Queenborough, on the Isle of Sheppey could become part of Queenborough Town Council instead of Sheerness Town Council if changes to local boundaries are agreed.

Councillors discussed amending the boundary at a Swale council meeting in July after the majority of residents said they welcomed the switch.

Islanders can now have their say in a five-week public consultation which runs until Friday, September 16.

The proposal is to move Queenborough Town Council’s boundary north from Moat Way to the A249 Brielle Way so it includes the new Lucas Close.

Cllr Richard Palmer who chairs Swale's community committee, said: “Carrying out community governance reviews of parish and town boundaries is part of our day-to-day work.

“As topography changes and housing development moves forward, we can sometimes end up with boundaries that no longer make any sense, leaving neighbours having different parishes or streets in one town belonging to the next town along.

“We went to a public consultation on the proposed changes in May. Two-thirds of respondents supported a review of boundary line in Queenborough so we have moved to the next stage which is a second public consultation."

During a similar exercise to move part of the Great Easthall estate from Tonge to Murston at Sittingbourne, the majority of residents rejected the proposal so it was dropped.
