The chief executive of a charity which is facing closure says she is grateful for the support they have received.
However, Sandie Hornby, from FACES (Families Affected by Caring Empowerment Services) of Kent, says it is looking increasingly likely it will be forced to shut with the loss of five jobs, despite a number of pledges being made.
Last week we reported how the group, which supports young carers in Sheppey and Sittingbourne, is in desperate need of funding.
There are a number of grant applications in the pipeline but if they are successful it will not be until next year – and they need £40,000 in the meantime to continue.
It no longer receives statutory funding from Kent County Council and support it was getting from Comic Relief and the Carers’ Trust ended last month.
Some borough councillors have come forward with donations of around £2,500 and there have been some individuals who have given money and a toy sale raised £600. But the charity, based in Park Road, Sittingbourne, is well off the total so it is expected services will be suspended.
Mrs Hornby has a meeting with KCC’s cabinet member for specialist children’s services Jenny Whittle today (Wednesday) to ask for help but she is not optimistic about FACES being saved.
“We have had so much support,” she said. “I think it’s really hit parents and carers now that it does look like we will be closing.
“It’s disappointing but we are still battling on.” She said she expects she and finance officer Louisa Crofts will stay on voluntarily to continue to apply for funding, but support services will no longer be provided.
It is hoped if any of the larger bids come off, they will be able to continue in some form next year.
