A neglected and underweight German Shepherd seen rooting through rubbish is now "settling well into kennel life".
Swale Borough Council Stray Dog Service issued an update on Bluebell, showing pictures of the now bright-eyed Alsatian.
On Wednesday evening, the dog was found eating out of bin bags in Jefferson Road, Sheerness.
"Based on the pictures we've received, the poor love has obviously suffered some pretty serious neglect and has been left to fend for herself," a spokesperson for the service commented.
Pictures showed the dog by black sacks, along with a close up of its paw – which looked to be matted and injured.
Some people were initially confused over the images, with some commenting that it looked like a fox.
A statement on the dog service's Facebook page tonight gave eager dog-lovers a more positive update.
"Here she is, our foxy little wannabe Bluebell," it said.
"What she's missing in fur she more than makes up for in personality and is proving herself to be an absolute sweetheart.
"She's settling well into kennel life and is already bonding well with staff.
"For a dog that's suffered through such neglect, she's still so trusting and has a strong love for people."
It was also revealed that the German Shepard was seven-years-old, and will turn eight in March.
Yesterday, Bluebell was taken to the vets, where she had her bloods taken and a thorough health check.
She was also prescribed a hibiscrub bath, before being given parasite treatment as well as anti-inflammatory medication and other antibiotics.
The update went on to say: "Weighing in at only 18.8kg, she is very underweight so a re-feeding programme has been implemented.
"The results of the blood tests will show whether she's been intentionally starved or has an underlying medical issue."
Despite being chipped, Bluebell wasn't registered as lost or missing.
'It's onwards and upwards for this lovely girl...'
The service has confirmed that they have located the owner and "will be seeking legal action due to failings under the Animal Welfare Act 2006".
They added: "Bluebell has officially been signed over to us so we will be moving her to a rescue next week.
"Thank you for your continued support, it's onwards and upwards for this lovely girl."
Since the update, more than a hundred heart-warming messages have been posted.
One person said: "Oh bless her, I hope she finds a good forever home."
Another commented: "You are absolute hero’s.
"This has made me cry, how wonderful to see these photos having seen the absolute heartbreaking images earlier in the week.
"You have my full admiration, you wonderful kind people."
