There's a burst of colour along the coast road on the Isle of Sheppey these days.

Swale council, in association with the Kent Wildlife Trust and Bumblebee Conservation Trust, has installed earth banks and planted hundreds of wild flowers along Marine Parade between the White House at Minster and Barton's Point Coastal Park, Sheerness.

Bee-friendly flowers have already been growing on the other side on a shingle bank alongside a cycle track as part of the Bee Roads project since last year.

But the flowers next to the Isle of Sheppey Sailing Club compound are new.

It is all to do with the Making A Buzz for the Coast campaign set up to help Britain's bees which are under threat from disease and other imported species.

The scheme, which is creating a network of roadside nature reserves, is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Staff from Bumblebee Conservation Trust have already held three workshops for youngsters on the Island at Queenborough, Minster and Leysdown to teach them about bees and other insects.
