A new gateway and a new hope for the island.

That’s how the Sheerness Times Guardian hailed the completion of
the Kingsferry bridge 50 years ago.

It was opened on April 20 1960 by Princess Marina, the Duchess
of Kent, having been completed in 27 months at a cost of
£1.3million.

With its central section, that rises up vertically to allow
ships through underneath, the bridge was described as a
“magnificent architectural accomplishment” and spurred hopes of new
prosperity for Sheppey.

The bridge is now thought to be one of the last of its kind in
the UK.

Times Guardian on May 6.
