A main was shut off after a large fire broke out next to a home.
Thick, black smoke could be seen billowing from outbuildings in Leysdown Road, Leysdown, on Sheppey.
One witness said the blaze started “like fireworks” and there was a large amount of smoke in the area.
Five fire engines were called to the scene between Warden Bay Road and Park Avenue. The road has since reopened.
Keith Boyce, who owns Boyce's Bakery which is opposite where the fire started, said: “I’m not sure how it started, but it looks like a shed at someone’s private bungalow.
“We’re still open and it doesn’t look like any other businesses have shut, it doesn’t look like the fire was too major.”
Rossi Charlie, who lives across the road, said: “My wife heard the crackling and saw the smoke and so I ran straight over there.
“It used to be a tyre shop, that’s why there was so much smoke, it’s an old building and the roof got hot and exploded. It completely destroyed my neighbour’s back fence.”
While another nearby resident added: “ It was very close to catching people's homes alight where I live.
“The fire brigade had to climb over my neighbours garden fence as the burning building was next to his bungalow – trees were also on fire.
“It was quite scary but thanks to the fire brigade they kept us safe.”
A fire service spokesman said: “People living or working near to Leysdown Road are advised to close windows and doors as a precaution, due to smoke coming from a number of outbuildings.”
Two fire engines remain at the scene, where crews are damping down any remaining hot spots. The technical rescue unit is also in attendance.
No injuries have been reported and it is believed the fire was started accidentally.
A police spokesman added: “Kent Police was called by Kent Fire and Rescue Service at 11.36am to a fire at a property in Leysdown Road, Leysdown-on-Sea.
“Officers are currently at the scene and have closed the road while fire crews tackle the blaze.”
