Swale Pride has hosted its first new radio show as it looks to offer a space for LGBTQ+ listeners to share their stories.
The volunteer-based group was set up to inform people in Sheppey and Sittingbourne about the LGBT community while helping fundraise for local charities.
It’s new radio show will supporting people in their community and be used as a space for people to share their stories, thoughts and concerns.
One of Swale Pride’s directors, Mary Culver, will be joined by security manager Peter Clements, as they host a weekly show on the Island’s BRFM every Tuesday between 7pm and 9pm.
Mary said: “We are hoping to build a team of useful people such as health and legal advisors to guide and support any of our listeners in any way we can.
“We want to put a serious message across that everyone should be allowed to be who they want to be but we also want to have some fun too with competitions and great music.
“We will be introducing Swale Pride and ask listeners for their participation on the shows, and in our future show we can then build around topics which cover various issues from coming out, mental health to transgender issues.”
Mary was one of the brains behind the idea and wanted the show to go ahead because the borough’s pride group thinks there is still a stigma around looking for advice.
She said: “We think it’s important as we feel a lot of people are still afraid to look for advice and feel inadequately represented.
“Cohesion and acceptance is important and with so much depression and anxiety surrounding the LGBTQ+ community, especially coming out of lockdown, we feel it is necessary for people to know that there is support and that it is really okay not to be okay.”
The first show hitting Swale residents radios aired last Tuesday.
