RNLI Sheerness crew save six people from River Medway and Thames Estuary

RNLI volunteers had to launch three times in three days to save six people.

Members from the Sheerness team were called at 7.35pm on Thursday last week (August 10) after being alerted by the UK coastguard to a 31-foot angling boat which had suffered engine failure.

The boat, which had two people onboard, was at anchor close to the Oaze Buoy in the Medway Approaches – seven miles from the boathouse.

The crew of six located the boat just 30 minutes later, before it was safely returned to Queenborough Harbour at 9.52pm.

The team were then paged just hours later on Friday, when, at 12.40pm, they were notified of a motor-boat craft with two people onboard which had also suffered machinery failure.

Located near Grain Spit opposite Garrison Point on the River Medway, those onboard were found and then taken under tow to Queenborough Harbour at 1.50pm.

RNLI Sheerness’ final call of the week came on Saturday (August 12) after the UK Coastguard was notified of a 27-foot sailing yacht with two people onboard which had run aground on Whitaker Spit in the Thames Estuary – 20 miles from the lifeboat station.

Launching at 3.08pm with a crew of six, they located the casualty at 4.05pm.

Yet due to a lack of water, it was decided the RNLI Burnham Atlantic lifeboat was best placed to tow the boat into the Crouch Estuary, in Essex where the vessel was located, rather than to Queenborough.

The ALB was therefore stood down at 6.19pm and was back on station at 7.20pm.

Meanwhile Saturday also saw the RNLI Sheerness team invited to the first Emergency Services Day by Kent Fire And Rescue Service.

The event was held at Sheppey Rugby Club in Lower Road, Minster.

A total of £91.53 was raised at the show for the RNLI charity.
