LOW level lighting could be installed on the Sheppey Crossing. The Highways Agency says this is a possibility, but it is standing by the 70mph speed limit, despite criticisms of it on safety grounds.

An agency spokesman said: “Lights were originally not put on the bridge due to the strong campaign by environmentalists, who said it would affect the flight of birds to the nearby Elmley Marshes and other protected areas on the Island.

“But we are now investigating the feasibility of low level parapet lighting and also the possibility of putting signs to warn motorists of high winds and dangerous driving conditions.”

The spokesman described the present speed limit as satisfactory.

Kent's Chief Constable Mike Fuller said he was worried about some aspects of the new bridge shortly after it opened.

He said speed, lack of lighting and emergency telephones, and the height of the safety parapets were all issues of concern.

The Highways Agency spokesman said a review of safety over the crossing would be carried out in July – a year after the opening.
