Ceilings of buildings around the eastern end of the Island will soon be bedecked with model aeroplanes to join in with Sheppey’s aviation centenary celebrations.
Coin Castle Amusements in The Promenade in Leysdown already has 100 model aeroplanes hanging from the ceiling.
Parish councillor Joe Brown, who runs the arcade, had the idea to put the planes up to celebrate this year’s centenary.
Every year there will be another plane added to the collection to celebrate the Island’s heritage of aviation.
The arcade is also stocking many aviation themed prizes and merchandise, including frisbees and models.
As well as decorating his arcade, Mr Brown has distributed 576 of the polystyrene models to other businesses and shops around the village in the hope they will follow suit and decorate their buildings.
A company called Kent Wholesale donated the aeroplanes as a goodwill gesture.
Mr Brown said he hopes other local shops will put the planes up to mark the centenary.
He added: “This local history we have gives us something to be proud of, even more than just coming from such a great place.
“We are very proud to celebrate this special year in Leysdown-on-Sea.
“We really hope Leysdown-on-Sea will really take off and be flying Wright for another 100 years. “We congratulate our neighbours at Muswell Manor and Eastchurch for all the fantastic events that have been held and thank them for all the hard work that has been put in.
“We look forward to an exciting high flying year for the area.”
