Morrisons to extend garage forecourt shop at Queenborough and install EV charging points

Morrisons is planning some major changes to its petrol station.

The company’s Motor Fuel Group division has applied for planning permission to extend its garage shop at the Queenborough branch at Neats Court off Thomsett Way on Sheppey.

Under the plans, the store would be expanded by 95 square metres meaning the carwash would have to be demolished.

It would be replaced by four jetwash bays within the existing car park on the opposite side of the entrance.

Three of the bays would be under an overhead canopy.

In addition, the company intends to install eight EV charging bays to assist in the country’s changeover to clean energy.

Although four new parking spaces would be created on the filling station forecourt - for those just wanting to pop into the garage shop, it means the overall provision of parking spaces will be cut by 20.

The main Morrisons store remains unaffected by the proposals.

Morrisons Motor Fuel Group says it intends running out new EV charging points at all 900 Morrisons petrol stations across the country.

It said the government’s target to reach 300,000 public charging points across the UK by 2030 was seriously off course.

As of April 1, this year, there were only 59,670 public electric vehicle charging devices in the UK, which was an increase of just 5,993 in the last quarter.

To reach the target, 14,137 chargers would need to be installed each quarter between now and 2030 – a 236% increase over the current build rate.

The company said it was determined to do its bit to help.
