Sittingbourne and Sheppey MP Derek Wyatt has given his backing to an Early Day Motion in Parliament calling for a stop to a proposed demonstration by Islamic extremists.
Anjem Choudary, the UK leader of al-Muhajiroun, plans to stage a march through the town of Wootton Bassett featuring empty coffins as a protest against Britain’s presence in Afghanistan.
Wootton Bassett has become well known in recent years for its closeness to RAF Lyneham where war dead from Iraq and Afghanistan are repatriated.
The Early Day Motion ‘considers that such a demonstration would be a gross mark of disrespect to the soldiers that have died or been wounded in Afghanistan, their families and those who continue to fight on active service in Afghanistan; further believes that such a march would cause great distress to those that have lost loved ones; notes that the Muslim Council of Britain has described the proposed march as "deplorable"; calls on the Home Secretary to urgently investigate the breaching of public order and other related offences’.
It urges Wootton Bassett Town Council and Wiltshire Police to ensure that any proposed demonstration that breaches The Public Order Act 1986 be rightly refused.
The al-Muhajiroun group officially relaunched in June 2009 having been disbanded in October 2004.
Dozens of Islanders have also joined a group on social networking site Facebook, which is against the demonstration.
