A woman who swerved out the way of a car driving towards her on the wrong side of the road says she’s “not sure she’d be here now” if it wasn’t for her quick reactions.
Charlienne, who does not wish to use her surname over fears of reprisals from the offending motorist, captured the shocking incident on her dash-cam.
It happened along Brielle Way, between Sheerness and Queenborough – a road notorious for nasty crashes.
The 40-year-old said: “It happened just past West Street, the exit from Blue Town, at around 7.27pm on Tuesday (November 14).
“I went round the bend as you pass West Street and as I got onto the small straight bit of road a car came towards me on my side of the road.
“They didn't try slowing down, stopping or moving out of the way. They weren’t overtaking anything, just driving on the wrong side of the road.
“I managed to brake slightly and swerve around the car but if the white van that had passed me was literally a second slower I would have been unable to avoid a very nasty accident.”
Charlienne, who lives in Sheerness, was driving to Queenborough with her friend to pick up another pal as the trio often play darts on a Tuesday night.
The A249 Brielle Way is the main route connecting the towns and has a history of crashes – with five serious collisions in as many years.
In November last year, the road was shut after two vehicles were involved in an accident.
In 2021 a man had to be airlifted to hospital and a woman was taken into custody after a crash involving a car and a van blocked the main road.
And sadly, in 2016, dad-of-two, Alessandro Arcadipane, lost his life two days after a crash along the road.
The biker was airlifted hospital but died of his injuries.
Speaking on her experience Charlienne, a mum-of-four, added: “I have only been driving for a year and I really don't know how I managed to avoid a terrible accident.
“My friend, who was in the car with me, has been driving for 41 years and she said how well I did to avoid it.”
“I'm just so glad I didn't have any of my children in the car at the time. I have four sons, three are older now but my youngest has multiple special needs and I dread to think what effect it would have had on him if he were with me.
“It was an awful experience for anyone.”
Charlienne said the ordeal has left her “shaken”.
She said: “To be honest I was very shaken at the time but I am ok now.
“I just keep thinking how everything would have been so different if that van had passed by me a second slower.
“I'm sure I wouldn't be here now if that was the case.
“I’m just glad I reacted quickly and am thankful it wasn't a different story to tell.”
Charlienne reported the incident to the police.
A spokesman for the force said: “We received a report of a vehicle being driven on the wrong side of the road on Brielle Way, Sheerness.
“The report was received half an hour after the incident and no vehicle details were provided.
“Officers will make inquiries should further information become available.”
