The mother of a man left with horrific scars after a stabbing in Sheerness has called for more CCTV and lighting to help prevent people being attacked.
Tina Wise is campaigning for more to be done to protect Islanders and is hoping businesses and Swale council will back her.
The 50-year-old said: “What is it going to take for someone to realise we need CCTV on every single corner in the town?
“Every other week I seem to be reading how someone has been stabbed or attacked, yet if the cameras were there people might think twice about what they’re doing or, if not, they’d be caught.”
Her son, Jack Wise, was attacked near McDonald’s, between Tantra nightclub and the high street, in the early hours of Saturday, August 27.
The 25-year-old, from Minster, was walking from the club to a cash point when he was hit from behind.
“When Jack and his friend got to near McDonald’s, the men who followed started arguing with them,” said Mrs Wise.
“They tried to walk away when one of them hit Jack over the back of the head with something.
“He remembers putting his arms up to defend his face and just feeling his hands go limp.
“He then managed, I don’t know how, to walk to the high street, near The Goat, before he blacked out.”
Mrs Wise added: “The frustrating part is that Jack can be seen being followed out of the club on CCTV and the attack was caught on camera but was too far away.”
Jack was rushed to London’s King’s College Hospital before going St Thomas’s for reconstructive surgery.
Mrs Wise added: “I was absolutely devastated when I saw the damage they had caused.
“I don’t think any mother should ever have to see that.
“He was slashed on the back of his head, across both wrists, on the top of his right arm and across his chest.
"The cuts on his wrists were the worst. He had to have an operation to reconnect the nerves and tendons because they’d been completely cut.
“When I saw him at the hospital, I thought that was it, he was going to lose his hands.”
Two men were arrested in connection with the attack but no one was ever charged.
Jack was at St Thomas’s for four days after surgery and was subsequently signed off work for four months to recover.
During that time he had no movement in his hands and required aid with everyday tasks.

Jack also had to undergo physiotherapy, which finished in April, but he has not yet regained the use of his left thumb.
“Jack was so lucky, but others might not be,” Mrs Wise said.
“That is why I want something to be done. I don’t want anything like this to happen to anyone else.”
Swale council is responsible for the borough’s CCTV coverage.
A spokesman said: “We, as part of the community safety partnership, will work with police to carry out a crime reduction survey in this area, to assess the potential need for any additional resources in the area.
“This may not necessarily result in increased CCTV but it may be considered as part of other potential solutions.
“The national CCTV code of conduct sets a high bar to justify CCTV being deployed in an area as whilst it can sound attractive, other more effective solutions could be available.
“This is why it’s important to gather all available evidence to determine what could be the most effective way of preventing crime.”
Officers investigated the case but say it has now been shelved unless anyone comes forward with new information.
A police spokesman said: “Officers explored all possible lines of inquiry following a report that a man had been assaulted in Sheerness High Street at 2.06am on August 27, 2016.
“This included reviewing CCTV footage, speaking with witnesses and issuing an appeal for information through the media. Two men were also arrested on suspicion of assault.
“The case was presented to the Crown Prosecution Service but following consultation it was ruled there was insufficient evidence to support a prosecution.
“All available lines of inquiry have now been exhausted and the case has been filed pending any further information coming to light.”
Anyone with information about the attack should call 01795 419119 quoting crime reference XY/033651/16 or can call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
