Tory MP Gordon Henderson says he continues to back Prime Minister Liz Truss despite her latest U-turn and her sacking of Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng.
Yesterday the Sittingbourne and Sheppey MP said he still supported the PM and today he refused to change his mind despite the latest shock changes to hit his government and the fact she's recorded record low approval ratings.
Speaking after unveiling plans for a new business park on Sheppey, he said: "I still support the Prime Minister. She has had a difficult decision to make. I wish she didn't have to make that decision. I can only hope that having made that decision it now stabilises the financial markets and we can move on."
He admitted he had voted for her "eventually" in the Tory leadership elections and said: "I never regret anything I have done in life. If you regret anything you have done, then you shouldn't have done it in the first place."
He went on: "I have had no communications from my constituents about this so far but I am sure there will be people who will be disappointed. I am sure local businesses who were looking forward to not having an increase in the corporation tax will be disappointed.
"I can only assure them that I will be lobbying hard for corporation tax to be reduced again as soon as it is feasible."
He added: "I think Jeremy Hunt will be a safe pair of hands as the new chancellor. I am sure he will not do anything to let the Prime Minister down."
Asked if he was surprised by all the U-turns, he admitted: "I wasn't really surprised because of the immense pressure being put on the Government. But the Prime Minister felt stabilising the financial markets was more important.
"Can I just add that my priority is ensuring that all the people of Sittingbourne and Sheppey, but most importantly those who have limited incomes, are protected from the worst effects of the cost of living crisis.
"I'll just remind people of the better things which have come from the so-called mini-budget, which is the scrapping of the National Insurance increase, the move to protect people from higher energy bills this winter, which will hopefully go through Parliament on Monday, and the promise to reduce the income tax for 30 million people from 20p in the pound to 19p in the pound.
"I am not aware of any plans to change that. So there are good things."
Asked if he thought Miss Truss was still the best Prime Minister he said: "She was elected leader of the Conservative party by a significant majority of party members. I'm a democrat and believe that once we have elected a leader we should give that leader our clear support.
"I always give them my 100% support"
"I have been an active Conservative going back as far as (former Prime Minister) Ted Heath. We have had other leaders and other Prime Ministers, some of whom at times I haven't agreed with, but I have always given them my clear 100% support."
