Ever wanted to have an opera performed in your front room? Well now’s your chance.
Kent Opera is offering fans the chance to bid for a private performance at a place of their choice.
The highest bidder will win the company coming to their chosen venue and performing Otello, the Verdi opera based on the Shakespeare play, as part of a fundraising campaign.
The bids are part of a fundraising drive for a community project working with prisoners at HMP Swaleside in Eastchurch over 20 weeks to perform the story later this year.
The Pros and Cons programme, costing more than £67,000, will see 63 inmates enjoy a rare chance to access the arts and perform to their friends and families.
Robin Pietà, director of productions for Kent Opera, said: “We want to change the way people think about opera and help introduce it to new audiences. What better way than to give people the chance to experience the joys of it wherever they wish.”
The pop-up company can perform anywhere including houses, offices and churches as long as bids exceed the production costs of £1,250 and travel is within 150 miles of London.
He added: “This auction is a fantastic opportunity for someone to hold a performance wherever they want, to whoever they want, for whatever reason. We could be a thank you to employees, be part of a marriage proposal, or even help someone ease a break up – it’s not over until the fat lady sings, as they say!”
To be considered for the performance, bids should be emailed to admin@kentopera.com and include full name, address, where they would like it to be held and why.
The cast need no more than four metres square to perform and require a week’s notice from Saturday, May 27. Bids close on Friday, May 19.
