Emily Wells might look like any other child preparing for her fourth birthday party – but she has never yet celebrated her real birthday.

That’s because she is a leap year baby and was born on February 29, 2008.

Emily, who goes to Woodlands Day Nursery in Minster, is the only child of Kelly Collins and Conrad Wells.

Her father died when she was five months old.

Kelly, of Harebell Close, Minster, said Emily was not due on the day she was born and was actually a few days late.

She was in labour with her for five days so said at first she did not even think she would end up with a leap day baby.

Usually the family celebrates Emily’s birthday on February 28 but this year, to celebrate her first “official” birthday, she will be having a Pirate and Princess Party.

Kelly, 28, said: “It’s important this year because it’s her actual birthday and it will be nice to go all out every four years and do something extra special.

“She’s really looking forward to her party.

“When you only have a real birthday once every four years it has to be celebrated in style.”

Another Islander who knows just how Emily will feel when she gets older is Daisy Rogers.

She was also born on February 29, and this year will be celebrating her fifth birthday – at 20 years old.

Her proud grandmother Joy Jenkins said Daisy, of James Street, Sheerness, was born earlier than her due date. They usually celebrate on February 28.
