Phase one of multi-million-pound Community Diagnostic Centre opens at Sheppey Community Hospital, Minster

Part of a multi-million-pound healthcare facility has opened, providing a range of vital tests and scans for patients.

The first phase of the Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) has launched at Sheppey Community Hospital in Minster.

It is set to benefit those living on the Isle of Sheppey, Sittingbourne and surrounding areas.

The facility has Computerised Tomography (CT) scanning, which uses X-rays to quickly create a 3D image of the body.

The second phase next year will include Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanning, which uses radio waves and a strong magnet to produce detailed images.

In Medway and Swale, patients have access to two CDCs, with the first – at Rochester Healthy Living Centre in Delce Road – having opened in August last year.

Since then, it has delivered more than 6,000 diagnostic tests including ultrasound scans as well as respiratory and cardiology services.

Both sites are staffed by Medway NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham and the Frailty Unit at Sheppey Community Hospital.

Work will continue in the New Year and aims to provide services up to seven days a week, 12 hours a day – according to demand.

Paul O’Connor, from Minster, was among the first patients to have a CT scan at the new unit.

The 62-year-old said: “It was really easy to get here as I live just around the corner. I was even able to come for my CT scan on a short break while working from home and I got a parking space straight away.

“It’s very different to coming into a busy, bigger hospital environment.

“The calming atmosphere is really noticeable – the murals on the wall and the quietness help you feel less anxious about the clinical setting.

“The radiographers Jay and Sohail were very friendly and caring. Overall it was a really great experience and I felt at ease.”

Jayne Black, chief executive at Medway NHS Foundation Trust, added: “I am very pleased to see patients benefiting from a range of vital tests at both the Sheppey and Rochester centres, with plans in place to develop both sites into next year.

“I really thank all our hardworking colleagues and partner organisations who have helped with the launch of the Sheppey centre recently.

“We are committed to providing the best possible care for the people we serve and this is further good news which will allow patients in Swale to access a range of important diagnostic services closer to home.”
