A pair of Island mums are appealing for help to revive the Sheerness Christmas carnival next year.
In the 1980s, festive celebrations, including a parade with floats through the High Street, the Sheppey Zulus and the switching on of the lights would attract huge crowds, but in recent years it has fallen by the wayside.
Inspired by their happy memories of the past, Stephanie Heaton and Nicola Bidgood are planning to organise activities in the town centre, provisionally set for November 28, 2015.
They have come up with a range of ideas, including a parade with a snow queen and princess, a Christmas market in Broadway, a grotto and late-night shopping.
Although the two friends are not yet clear on how they will fund it all, they are hoping with some help they will be able to apply for lottery funding and get sponsorship from local businesses.
A Facebook page they set up about the carnival received more than 400 likes in less than 24 hours.
Miss Heaton, 34, of Berridge Road, Sheerness, said: “There are so many people that have responded. It’s overwhelming actually to know that there are so many people out there that want to help and do something about it.”
The organisers are planning their first meeting on October 1, with Sheerness Enhancement Association for Leisure, which has offered its support, along with other people who want to help.
They are now seeking people who can fully commit to lending their support when the time comes.
Anyone who would like to get involved can get in touch via the Sheerness town centre Christmas fundaythis is how is it spelt on Facebook Facebook page.
