Police are looking into the possibility that a woman who died after being hit by a train was at the station the night before.

The 47-year-old woman from Sittingbourne died after being struck by a train at Sheerness station.

British Transport Police was alerted to the incident at 8.32am on Saturday morning.

But their enquiries have revealed she was at the station on Friday night.

They are appealing for witnesses who saw anything which could assist their investigation to come forward.

The woman has not yet been formally identified and a post-mortem is due to take place on Thursday.

The station was closed on Saturday morning while police and paramedics were on the scene. Train services were resumed by about 11.30am.

A BTP spokesman said: "The woman appears to have suffered injuries consistent with being struck by a train.

"The incident is being treated as non-suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner.

"Officers are still working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the woman came to be by the tracks, however the post-mortem tomorrow may help tell us more about what happened."
