An outdoor pool has been shut after children slipped over, only four days after reopening following a £22,500 refurbishment.

Sheppey Leisure Complex’s paddling pool was closed yesterday after youngsters fell on the surface.

In a statement on Facebook, Swale Community Leisure, which runs the centre, said: “The paddling pool was reopened on Saturday after the refurbishment.

“However due to a few incidents, Swale council has closed the pool until further notice to have an anti-slip coat added to the pool lining to prevent future incidents.

“Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause and we hope to have it opened as soon as possible.”

The council splashed out tens of thousands to get the attraction in Sheerness ready for the summer.

A Swale council spokesman added: "The pool has been drained to facilitate remedial works to the pool lining.

"These works are planned to start as soon as possible, however forecasts of rain mean they may not be able to start until early next week. This is because dry weather is required to ensure the materials used can fully set.

"The pool should be fully open to the public again next weekend, June 10 and 11, when local residents and visitors alike will be able to enjoy the safer and improved facilities."

Mum Krystyna Adach, from Sheerness, said her daughter was one of those to fall: “It was very dangerous – the amount of times my daughter and my friend's son slipped on the lining of the pool.

“Rosie, my two-year-old, wasn’t running and still managed to slip backwards and bang the back of her head and back on the floor and Harley, the little boy, fell and hurt his chin.

"He still has the mark and Rosie has a lump.”

The pool's closure will affect children enjoying their half term break.

“The amount of money that has been spent doesn’t look like a lot has been achieved," Krystyna added.

"Still no more water activities, it just looks like the fences have been painted and the lining of the pool a small area had be redone.”
