Long awaited repair work to Sheerness High Street has started.

Cllr Steve Worrall and his colleague Cllr Angela Harrison have been calling for something to be done for years due to problems with flooding.

The road from its junction with Millennium Way almost up to the clock tower is being completely resurfaced and the drainage channels are being renewed.

It had not been due to take place until February, but after the councillors pushed for a meeting, Kent County Council’s drainage and flooding manager Kathryn Lewis agreed to move it forward.

The road has been shut and traffic is being diverted to come up Broadway and go round the clock tower – with the lower part of the high street still open.

It is hoped the road will be finished in a week.

KCC has not yet revealed how much is being spent on the high street as costs have not yet been finalised.
