Rescue dogs were the stars of an open day to celebrate 50 years since the formation of a lifeguard unit.

The event was organised by the Sheerness Swimming Club and Lifeguard Corps to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of the lifeguard section.

The 50 year celebration, which took place on Sunday , was one of three anniversaries for the club this year – it was 125 years ago that the swimming club was formed and 40 years since the two merged.

There were demonstrations from members of the club, the RAF helicopter from Wattisham flew over and the RNLI lifeboat also attended.

Splash Pals – a Newfoundland dog rescue team – also gave demonstrations of how the animals save people from the water.

Newfoundland dogs are famous for their water rescuing abilities and have webbed feet.

Club spokesman Phil Crowder, said: “It was absolutely fantastic, the best day we have had for a long time.

“The open day was to give demonstrations to the public and raise awareness of who we are."
