Residents fear fly-tippers may have dumped asbestos in alley behind Sheerness street

Flytippers are making life a misery for residents of a Sheerness street.

The rubbish dumpers are targeting a small area of open ground next to an alleyway at the rear of houses in Unity Street.

Shaun Smith, 54, who lives in the street, said: “It’s being used as a complete and utter dumping ground.

“We’re all upset about it. The council has had nothing but complaints about the situation.”

As well as tyres, mattresses and other objects, it’s thought asbestos is also now being left in the alley.

A team of campaigners has complained to council officers about the mess, and have attempted to clean the area themselves previously.

Mr Smith, who is a scrap-metal worker, added: “Children have started to play on it now, and that’s why we decided to move it.

“It’s been a problem here since the 1970s.”

Mr Smith said the sight of the rubbish was “disgusting”.

A spokesman for Swale council said: “We are aware of the rubbish, which is on private land, and we are in discussions with landowner about its removal.”
