Steel worker breaks his leg

A WORKER at Sheerness steel mill broke his leg in two places when he stumbled backwards to avoid falling brickwork.

The experienced 40-year-old bricklayer from Sheerness was lining a container before molten steel was poured into it when part of the lining collapsed.

He was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham for treatment.

Mill production director Keith Plowman said: "It was the most serious accident here for some time and we will review our procedures in the area.

"The Health and Safety Executive has been informed as a matter of course."
