Mesmerising photos captured the stunning firework display and festivities that marked the end of a week-long event.

Hundreds of people enjoyed the third Sheerness Seaside Festival.

Among those taking part in the Sheppey Carnival on Saturday were eccentric inventor Tim Bell with his mobility scooter, transformed into a tank, the Artistic Academy and Euphoria baton twirlers, Professor James and his Mr Punch puppet, 8th Sheppey Scouts celebrating their centenary and Howdens Joinery which has recently opened a store at Neats Court.

The Croydon Steel Band joined the mile-long route through Sheerness again after the Island’s own marching bands were unavailable.

Sheerness Broadway was closed to traffic all day for children’s fairground rides from C&J Attractions, stalls and music from the Sheppey FM roadshow.

Phil Crowder, who chairs the Sheerness Town Team, said: “We were delighted to see so many people swamp the town for the carnival on Saturday.

“We had more than 30 entries including carnival courts from across Kent and even Essex.

“It was also a joy to welcome our neighbours from Sittingbourne who will be staging their own new-look carnival this Sunday (August 25).

“The Town Team would like to thank everyone for supporting our events and helping to make them happen.”

He’s now calling for people to get in touch early and volunteer their services for the festival next year.

“At times it was a stretch,” he admitted. “We are only a small band and have very limited funds. We, and the EMUs (Sheppey’s event marshalling unit), are both struggling for people come on board.

“It doesn’t take a lot of time. All we need is a commitment and a passion to help create what are mostly free activities for families and visitors over the summer.”

The week-long festival began the previous Saturday with a free music day in the town centre featuring six performers including singer Katherine Preston, teen group Nostaglia and the Lookin’ Back band.

There were model train rides at Barton’s Point Coastal Park, workshops at the Cottage of Curiosities in Rose Street, donkey rides and free Punch and Judy shows in Beachfields, beach cleans on the seafront and a talk about the Maunsell sea forts at the Sheppey Little Theatre.

The Holland family organised a funfair over the carnival weekend and sponsored the free seafront fireworks on Saturday night.
