'Swift action' needed over swim pool

CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save Sheerness swimming pool fear repair costs will spiral out of control if Swale council doesn't take action soon.

Cllr Ian Smart (Lab), chairman of the Save our Sheppey Pool campaign, told a full meeting of Swale Borough Council: "With every day that goes past, these repairs are becoming more and more urgent.

"I think many people in Sheerness are very disappointed at the length of time it is taking to resolve this issue."

The council had pledged financial support to keep the pool off Royal Road open. However, cheaper estimates for repairing the beleaguered pool supplied by Cllr John Stanford (Lib Dem) and proposals for a new pool at Minster College have forced the council to reconsider its position.

Cllr Gerry Lewin (Con), the executive member for community development, told the meeting that a decision on when, or whether, work would begin on repairing the Sheerness pool should be made by the end of the year.
