BRRR...it was not quite freezing temperatures for the annual Arctic Swim in the sea off The Leas at Minster, but it was cold enough.

The temperature was 38degF (3.33degC) as about a dozen brave souls from the City of Rochester Swimming and Lifeguard Club charged in and took the plunge.

The club members protect the beach in warmer weather and have been doing the Arctic Swim for many years in aid of funds.

Secretary Janet Gifford said: "It was a calm day and we have known the sea to be colder.

"About a dozen members took part and the rules state they have to swim three arm strokes and get fully immersed in just a costume rather than a wet-suit.

"They also have to be aged 10 or over.

"Eleven-year-old Dana Betts retained the cup for being the youngest member to take part. She loves training to be a lifeguard."

After the swimmers emerged from the water they were treated to a warming cup of hot cocoa or soup in the lifeguard station to dispel their goose bumps.
