A teenager has been named as one of the country’s top motorists – two years before he is legally old enough to drive.

Borden Grammar School pupil James Wigglesworth, 15, was selected from a regional competition and came second in the 14 to 16 age category at the final of the 2014 Young Driver Challenge, held at the Birmingham NEC last Saturday.

He originally entered a competition at Bluewater where entrants were tested on a series of skills and manoeuvres including parallel parking, figures of eight, turning in the road, steering, judgement and positioning.

They also had to pass the Goodyear Driving Academy – an online driving simulator which examines users’ knowledge of the Highway Code.

James was one of 40 chosen from more than 350 entries to compete at the national finals.
He said: “It was an amazing feeling when they announced I had finished second place in the 14-16 age category.”

James has had several lessons with driving tuition provider Young Driver, which was established in 2009 with the aim of encouraging safer young motorists and organised the contest for anyone between the ages of 11 and 16.
