A TEENAGER appeared at Maidstone Crown Court on Tuesday accused of three charges of causing death by careless driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Luke Bootes, of Hawthorn Avenue, Sheerness, is also accused of aggravated vehicle taking, drink-driving and having no insurance.

The 18-year-old was driving a Jaguar XJS Sovereign car that was in collision with a Peugeot 205 on the A249 Brielle Way, Sheerness, near West Street, Bluetown, on June 10.

Killed in the crash were friends Jean Wigglesworth, Phyllis Paolillo, both of Medway Road, Sheerness, and Carol Whittaker, of Linden Drive, Sheerness, who were all in their 50s.

Bootes appeared on a TV link with Elmley Prison, Sheppey, with his right arm in a sling. He kept his head bowed for most of the brief hearing.

Judge Andrew Patience, QC, remanded him in custody until August 28, when he is expected to enter pleas to the charges.
