Three young adventurers have been chosen to go on a trip of a lifetime to Japan – but they need help raising the funds.
James O’Neill, 14, Sean Knight, 14, and Katelyn Berrill, 13, who are part of Sheppey District Scouts, are hoping to take part in the World Scout Jamboree 2015 from July 28 to August 8 in Kirarahama, Yamaguchi, Japan.
They each need to raise £3,500 for flights and accommodation.
James, of Delamark Road, Sheerness, and Sean, of Mallard Crescent, Iwade, are members of the Sheppey Explorers, which is for those aged 14 to 18 once they’ve left the Scouts.
Katelyn, of Highfield Road, Halfway, is in 8th Sheppey Scouts but will be an Explorer by the time the trip comes around.
The trio took part in a Kent selection camp in Maidstone this month and were among 80 children from Kent to be picked for the 23rd jamboree, which is where they get the chance to meet other Scouts and take part in adventure activities.
The theme this year is “Wa” which means harmony, unity, friendship and peace.
Sittingbourne Community College pupil James’s grandad David O’Neill said: “I’m so pleased James was one of those who managed to get through.”
Debbie Smith, who is Fulston Manor School pupil Sean’s mum, said it was a once in a lifetime trip for the youngsters.
Isle of Sheppey Academy pupil Katelyn’s mum Joanne Berrill said she was very proud of her daughter.
District commissioner Melvin Wilson is appealing to companies and organisations who may be able to help the group reach their target.
