Family and friends of a schoolboy critically injured after being hit by a car have walked over the roof of a London landmark to raise money for his care.
Miles Rogers suffered a severe brain injury after an accident outside Sheppey Rugby Club in Lower Road, Minster, in October 2011.
He was being cared for by the Children’s Trust rehabilitation centre in Tadworth, Surrey, but returned to the house of his dad, George Loscombe, in Minster around Christmas time.
Last Monday, the 12-year-old was joined by his mum, Kelly, stepdad, Daniel Arnott, sisters, Gemma West and Jade Loscombe, his dad, his brother-in-law, Ryan Lehany, and friends Joseph Bright and Harry and Alfie Bates for a tour over the 02 Arena in Greenwich.
The venue started offering the roof walks this time last year, and visitors get a 360-degree view across the capital from a 52m-high viewing platform.
Miles was hoisted across in his wheelchair, while his companions walked.
They were sponsored to do the climb and have raised almost £2,000, which will go towards Miles’s care – specifically his hyperbaric oxygen treatment, which involves providing the body with extra oxygen.
He’s still completely wheelchair-bound, and communicates yes and no with his eyes.
Gemma West said her brother was doing lots of physiotherapy at home and would soon be doing more.
The 27-year-old said: “The walk went really well – it was good fun.
“The tour people were really good with Miles, and he was alert and awake at the top so he got the views.
“It was quite steep at some points going up, but more scary coming down. The views at the top were incredible.
“We would like to thank everyone for their help and support, and Wellpets in Sheerness and Minster as they have helped a lot with donations.”
Family members will also be raising funds in a Monte Carlo or Bust Banger Rally next month.
