Thieves almost got away with more than just the charity barrel from the Foxley Road lights switch-on – they nearly stole residents’ Christmas spirit, too.
Organisers Pat and John Down and Sharon and Phil Williams could not believe their eyes on Sunday morning after the 10th switch-on to find the aluminium barrel missing.
Luckily, the £800 taken in donations at the previous night’s switch-on had already been removed and all that was left was some small change.
Police are appealing for anyone who has information about the thieves, who used bolt cutters to remove the barrel and also cut the rope lights, to come forward.
Mrs Down said the barrel was still there at 11pm when she went to bed and that more than one person must have been involved because of the weight of the barrel.
She said: “They must have just seen the opportunity and took it. It’s quite a heavy thing, though.
“When we found out it had been taken I said 'right, that’s it, I’m not doing it any more’. We were so disappointed.
“It makes you feel like not making the effort because it is a lot of hard work.
“But people’s comments have been so uplifting we will do it again next year. It makes it all worthwhile.”
Luckily, a couple of dog walkers spotted the stolen barrel dumped at the allotments near Whiteway Road, so it was returned to its rightful place – even better secured – in time for the annual Queenborough torchlight parade.
Insp David Applegate said: “This is a despicable crime, targeting a community who have come together in the spirit of Christmas.
“I would urge anyone who may have information about the individuals who did this to come forward, or report them in confidence.
“Anyone with information can contact Swale Crime Unit on 01795 419182 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”
