Tower wraps up for Christmas

One of the Island’s land marks has got its winter clothes on thanks to a dedicated knitting group.

Swampy Ewe-Knitted has spent more than two months knitting squares and sewing them all together to produce a 45-foot long scarf.

At a presentation on Saturday, members of the club decorated the clock tower in High Street, Sheerness, with the scarf.

The huge scarf wrapped round the clock more than four times and the group is hoping it will stay up there until the Christmas lights in the town come down.

Members of the club were inspired to do something different with their knitting after taking part in National Knitting Week in October.

Swampy Ewe-Knitted was formed by Sheerness mum Rowena Hoult earlier this year.

Rowena had made several appeals for the people of the Island to knit some squares, and was delighted with the response she received.

She said: “It took some coordination to try and get the scarf up there but it was good fun.

“We wanted to do something fun that would also raise awareness of knitting and get the community involved.”

Rowena and Swampy Ewe-Knitted would like to thank everyone who donated wool, needles and knitted squares which all contributed to the success of the scarf.
