A man has been airlifted to a London hospital and a woman is in custody after a crash that blocked a main road into a town for almost five hours.
Brielle Way was blocked in both directions due to the accident, involving a red Ford Fiesta and a white Peugeot Partner van, between West Street, Sheerness, and Whiteway Road to Queenborough.
Police were called to the collision at 7.41am this morning.
A spokesman said: "The alleged driver of the Ford, a woman in her 30s from Sheerness, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and remains in custody as enquiries continue."
He added that the Peugeot driver was airlifted to a London hospital for treatment on a "serious" leg injury.
Officers conducted enquiries at the scene and a road closure was in place for most of the morning, between the Breille Way roundabout, which connects with Queenborough, and Blue Town.
The ambulance service said a total of three patients were assessed and treated before being taken to hospital.
A spokesman added: "Two patients were taken to Medway Maritime Hospital and another patient was airlifted to King's College Hospital in London with more serious injuries."
Motorists were advised to expect delays and, where possible, use an alternative route.
There was busy traffic along Queenborough Road and Halfway Road heading in and out of Sheerness due to traffic being diverted.
But police said the road was reopened at about 12.20pm, and traffic was said to have returned to normal.
Investigating officers have spoken with several witnesses but would like to hear from anyone who has information and yet to get in touch.
They are particularly keen to obtain dash camera footage of either of the vehicles being driven in the moments leading up to the collision.
Anyone who can assist should call police on 01795 419119, quoting the reference 14-0207.
